Cycling for All
Thanks to Big Lottery funding we have purchased several different types of adaptive bikes including:
- Twister: a side-by-side tandem with two sets of handlebars and pedals.
- A hand bike for people with little to no lower body strength.
- A selection of trikes for children and adults to help with balance problems.
- A quad bike that helps with balance problems and allows feet to be strapped in or splinted to aide the pedalling process.
- A recumbent trike that allows users to sit back and steer from the side; giving a more comfortable position for some.
- A platform bike, which is suitable for wheelchairs.
Most bikes can switch from free-wheel to fixed wheel systems; this means that users who have difficulty pulling pedals upwards or completing full circles can be aided by continuous turning and momentum.
Regular sessions have started for particular schools, groups and day centres. All sessions are held at Swindon Athletics Track at the County Ground. It is a safe, enclosed environment that offers smooth cycling surfaces and white lines that can act as directive aids for the visually impaired cyclists.
