Leisure Services is committed to increasing participation in sport at all levels and works to promote equality of opportunity for people with physical and learning disabilities to take part in and enjoy sport and physical activity at a level of their choice.

We will do this by:

  • creating new opportunities that meet the needs of disabled people.
  • increasing the number who are mainstreamed in current provision.
  • increasing the number who join sports clubs.

We aim to deliver sporting opportunities for disabled people and to ensure that all disabled children and young people - whether in mainstream or special schools - can access a range of sporting opportunities and maximise potential.

We will work with local clubs and facilities to implement an inclusive ethos by:

  • Training club coaches and disseminating promotional material to encourage participation from disability groups.
  • Enabling disabled people to benefit directly from time and expertise of Community Sports Coaches.
  • Improving the opportunities for progression of disabled athletes and encouraging co-ordination between mainstream and disability sports clubs.
  • Supporting talented disabled sports people to achieve their optimum level of performance.
  • Increasing the number of disabled adults with coaching and officiating qualifications.
  • Raising the profile of and opportunities for disabled athletes via the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
