Ration Box Home Exercise Programme

Leisure Services has developed an exercise scheme called the Ration Box Home Exercise Programme which is designed to help reduce the risk of falls in the older age group, targeting those who are unable to attend group sessions.

The name ‘Ration Box’ was chosen as the exercises are designed to provide a range of movements that are just enough to help maintain mobility, flexibility and muscular strength
(in the same way that rations during the post-war era provided just enough daily nutritional needs).

A qualified instructor initially demonstrates the exercises to participants and once satisfied that they can perform them safely, they are given a Ration Box containing exercise equipment, an exercise record card and evaluation form. They keep the box for 12 weeks and at the end of the 12-week period, the boxes are collected and the course evaluated.

Should clients wish to continue with the exercise programme they are able to purchase their own Ration Box thereby maintaining their activity level and benefiting long-term.
