Inspire, Engage, Energise

As London prepares for the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’, Leisure Services are working on their plans to maximise the benefits that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games can bring to the town. The Games have the potential to inspire thousands of Swindon residents to participate in more physical activity and begin or continue their journey towards a healthier lifestyle.

We are committed to raising the aspirations of local people and believe that sport is a fantastic tool to achieve this. We want as many Swindon residents to feel connected to the London 2012 Games as possible and we want to recognise and showcase local people, local clubs and local activities.

Our aim is to engage with as many Swindon residents as possible, giving them the opportunity to take part in sport and physical activity at the level and in the format that is right for them. This could be as a participant, a coach, an official, a leader or a volunteer.

We will use the ‘buzz’ created from the Games to encourage long term involvement in sport and physical activity and energise local communities, individuals and groups to be the best they can be.

Showcasing Swindon’s Talent

Swindon is full of talent and we want to use this ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to shout about it. We have athletes; coaches and volunteers that make a huge contribution to our town and to sport in general. The London 2012 Games gives us a platform to showcase this and recognise people’s efforts.

Swindon is fortunate to have one of 21 permanent ‘Live Site’ screens in country, on which the Games will be shown. In addition to the coverage of the Games themselves, the screen will be used to cover major sporting events in the year leading up to the Games. We believe this presents us with a fantastic opportunity to showcase our local talent, inspire people to participate in sport and physical activity and promote local activities on offer.

Wharf Green, home to our Live Site will play host to demonstrations and taster activities and fun interactive games, all with a sporting flavour and linked to the coverage played on the screen.
