Get Active Day Philosophy

Promoting Activity for Life

It's not hard to get healthy. Do you normally get your exercise by jumping to conclusions and running up bills? If so, then maybe you should be thinking about getting a little more active and gaining the benefit of regular, gentle exercise.

We should all be aiming for 30 minutes of physical activity, five times a week for maximum health gains.

Being active can help you:

  • prevent heart disease
  • control blood pressure
  • reduce the impact of diabetes
  • control body weight
  • improve mobility
  • strengthen bones and muscles
  • prevent osteoporosis
  • reduce the risk of a stroke
  • reduce stress
  • give you more energy
  • improve self-esteem

What is Get Active Day?

Get Active Day is a 'Red Letter' day where we ask people in Swindon to take part in a minimum of 15 minutes of physical activity.

What do I have to do?

You have to do an activity that makes the heart beat faster. E.g. walking, cycling, digging the garden, playing frisbee/swingball.

Who can take part?

Anyone. We want residents and people working in or visiting Swindon on the day to participate.

Why bother?

Being physically fit reduces many of the modern health risks associated with inactivity.

Why should I be more active?

If you're active for just 30 minutes a day, you could really improve your health and feel better. Staying active will help to keep you mobile and maintain your independance as you get older.

How do I get involved?

By either taking part in an advertised activity, or by organising something yourself.

How do I organise something for my business/school/local community?
