Transport & Streets

Public Transport

Most bus services in the Borough of Swindon are provided on a commercial basis by private bus companies - mostly by Thamesdown Transport and Stagecoach. Details of these and other operators are given below.

Where services are not being provided on a commercial basis, the Council has powers to secure and subsidise them through contracts with bus operators. Services receiving subsidies include:

  • Sunday and bank holiday services
  • Some evening services
  • Some off-peak daytime services
  • Some works services
  • Many rural services

Text Messaging

You can now have timetable information for all Swindon bus stops sent to you by text message.

This guide is produced by Swindon Borough Council with assistance from Thamesdown Transport and South West Public Transport Information Limited.

Every care has been made in compiling this information but the Council cannot be held liable for any inaccuracies or omissions.

How it Works

Nearly all bus stops in the borough have been marked with a seven-letter code beginning with 'SWI'. If your stop has an information panel the bus stop code will be shown inside the panel. If it hasn’t, the code will be shown on the bus stop flag.

All the bus stops in the borough are marked on a series of maps. There are separate maps for the Swindon urban area, the town centre, Highworth, Wroughton and four groups of villages. Find the map that has the name of the bus stop you want information from.

Use the index to match the bus stop name with the appropriate bus stop code. The index is available as a downloadable pdf file:

Bus Stop Code Index (3.0Mb)

(Please note that ‘In’ refers to buses travelling towards Swindon town centre; 'Out’ refers to buses travelling away from the town centre.)

Where there are groups of stops with the same name (e.g. Fleming Way, The Link Centre), the principal services from each individual stop are shown.

Text and Go

Just follow these simple instructions to get details of the next three scheduled buses from your nearest stop.

  1. Key in the Bus Stop Code (see above) shown in the timetable case (or on the bus stop plate if there is no case)
  2. Text the code number to 84268 (25p plus the standard charge from your service provider)
  3. A few seconds later you will receive the next three scheduled departures for your stop.
