Traffic Management

The two traffic management teams (north and south of the railway line) carry out local safety schemes that are designed to reduce road accidents. These may take the form of improvements to road geometry, traffic calming, road marking, signing and the introduction of traffic regulation orders.  In addition, the teams are responsible for the introduction of residents parking schemes and bus lanes.

Local Safety Scheme - Buscot Bend

(A361 between Highworth and Lechlade)

Before

Buscot Bend - Before the Safety Scheme
In the three years before the introduction of this scheme, accidents at this location resulted in 4 serious and 6 slight casualties at a total cost of over £625,000 to our community.

After

Buscot Bend - After the Safety Scheme
Since this scheme was installed (in Nov 2002, costing £18,500) there has been 1 slight casualty. This scheme saved over £180,000 in the first year.

Some schemes have arisen as a result of public concern. Are you aware of an accident problem that you feel needs investigating? If so, please let us know.

Traffic SignsTraffic Signs

Traffic signs are essential for the implementation of the Council’s traffic management schemes and for the enforcement of road traffic law.  All traffic signs must be in accordance with the current Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (SI 2002 No. 3113) which prescribe the designs and conditions of use for traffic signs to be lawfully placed on or near roads in England, Scotland and Wales.

Further information can be found at www.dft.gov.uk - click on ‘Roads and Vehicles’, ‘Traffic signs and signals’, then ‘Traffic signs legislation’.

The Council will consider requests for direction or tourism signs.  There is an assessment fee and, if approved, the cost of the signs (including design, manufacture, installation and maintenance) will need to be met by the applicant.

Traffic Regulation Orders

To improve safety or the environment, the Council may introduce traffic regulation orders to regulate pedestrian movement and the speed, movement and parking of vehicles.

Any person may object to the making of an order; for information on which orders are currently being proposed, please contact us. An objection will need to be made in writing and will then be reported to the Council’s elected members before any decision is taken on whether or not to proceed.

Road Signs

Along the roads of Britain you will see many different road markings and literally hundreds of different road signs. How many of them do you know? Check them out by visiting the Highway code website at
