Sustainable Travel Plans

Swindon Borough Council is commited to planning for a sustainable future in which our town can continue to experience economic growth, while at the same time taking steps to tackle climate change.

A major challenge for Swindon is to maintain the pace of development while reducing congestion on the road network in order to 'Keep Swindon Moving'

Congestion costs UK businesses £20 billion every year

Sustainable Travel Plans have a key role to play in this challenge and can help deliver a range of benefits for all of Swindon's people and organisations.

A Travel Plan is a package of practical measures to encourage people to choose alternatives to single-occupancy car-use. This can be in terms of commuting and business travel as part of an Employer Travel Plan, or it can applied to the school run as a School Travel Plan.

Park and Ride (Wroughton) combines the covenience of using the car while reducing congestion and pollution

A Travel Plan should be tailored to a particular site and include a range of measures to reduce congestion and pollution by making alternatives to single occupancy car use more feasible and more attractive - whether for environmental, health or financial reasons.

Measures at a work place might include;

  • the setting up of a car sharing scheme
  • the provision of cycle facilities
  • negotiating improved bus services
  • offering attractive flexible-working practices
  • subsidised travel,
  • restricted and/or charged car parking
  • video conferencing and remote working to cut business travel.
